So I choked a little during a session and started coughing. The little one who was engaged in some form of rambunctious musical capering stopped, came over, leaned his head on my shoulder and patted my back. He checked to see if I was all right, before getting back to his music making.
This is not the first time that I have observed this. A while back, an older kid touched my back when she saw that I was moving things in an odd fashion due to a pulled muscle. Children of all abilities may have trouble connecting with others. However, this does not mean that they do not have the heart and empathy for others. In most cases, they also look forward to forming authentic connections with people around them.
Children of all abilities, beneath their diagnoses and idiosyncrasies what not, have a heart and a soul. Let's not forget that when we engage with them, be it in work and play.
